What do God and Potatoes have in common?
Humor was one of the few ways that you could actually remain sane, during the long years of communism. But a bad joke told in the presence of the wrong person could actually land you in political prison. Here is such an example below.
A farm worker greets Nicolae Ceaușescu at a potato farm.
“Comrade Ceaușescu, we have so many potatoes that, piled one on top of the other, they would reach all the way to God,” the farmer excitedly tells his leader.
“But God does not exist,” replies Ceaușescu.
“Exactly,” says the farmer. “Neither do the potatoes.”

The communist regime was constantly telling people that the production of fruits, vegetables and grains has exceeded all expectations, but in the last years of the dictatorship very little food could be found in the stores.
We tell the story of hardship and lack of food despite the official announcements, in our Communism tour of Bucharest. Book your tour today.
