What is the difference between the Art Deco and the Bauhaus architectural styles? This picture of taken in the Jewish neighborhood of Bucharest explains it perfectly: the building on the left is Art Deco, the one on the right is Bauhaus (more streamlined, less decorations, bolder, clean-cut lines). They both align with the broader Modernist movement that swept across Europe and North America in the early 20th century, and which was popularized in Bucharest mostly by Jewish-Romanian architects.
Bucharest has a very eclectic mix of architectural styles, and a very rich heritage of modern Jewish architects that contributed to it. We explore both of these in depth in our Jewish Tour. Check out our Experiences page to see details on how to book your tour.
